Zocor, can I cut the tablet in half?

by Admin on August 30, 2010

I heard you should not cut statin tablets in half. The thing is I have been prescribed a 20mg tablet of Zocor per day. If I bought the 40mg tablet and split it in two it would work out cheaper. Can I do that or do I risk not getting the correct dosage. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you all for answering so promptly. You have set my mind at rest. I shall split the 40mg and save myself a packet. (It works out to one third the price of buying 20mgs – now thats a saving alright.)

Yes, you can cut it in two. You need to get a professional pill cutter, however. ( it will cut it almost clean).

This is advice from, my pharmacist and my doctor, both of who say it is fine to cut Zocor. And , you’re right, you will save money,

The generic of Zocar, Simvastatin, is even less expensive.

? The nation’s second-largest insurer, UnitedHealthcare, is advising its customers in Wisconsin to split certain pills in half to cut costs in a program that is expected to be offered nationwide by the end of the year. It is giving away pill-splitters and recommends that the following drugs can be cut in half safely, with a doctor’s consent:

? Blood pressure drugs: Aceon, Atacand, Avapro, Benicar, Cozaar, Diovan, Mavik

? Antidepressants: Lexapro, Pexeva, Zoloft

? Cholesterol drugs: Crestor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor

? Antivirals: Valtrex

Pill cutters are cheap, easy and accurate (you do not have to be 100%, just try your best to cut it in half and cleanly)

any Pill can be cut, but the drug companies would rather you buy more smaller pills

Another alternative is generic zocor which would be cheaper, but if you can get the doctor to prescribe 40 and you split it that is a great way to go
