Would you sub hydrocodone for methadone?

by Admin on August 18, 2010

my mom has Fibromyalgia and Peripheral Neuropothy so she is on a 25 mg duragesic patch every 3 days and takes 2 10mg lortabs per day. Her doctor is wanting to take her off of that and put her on 3 methadone 10mg per day. Doesn’t that seem more dangerous. What do you think?

If her pain is controlled by the patch and the 2 lortabs per day, I’d advise sticking to that. If the doctor is wanting to replace both meds for the 3 methadone per day, I’d ask the doctor what his reasons are. Methadone can be an effective pain reliever for severe pain, but is also highly addictive in nature. If she does go on methadone, she may not need 3 doses of 10mg per day. She should take the smallest dose possible that will alleviate her pain. Methadone is long acting, and is usually only prescribed once or twice per day.

Ask the doctor lots of questions, and if your mother does decide to try the methadone, take the smallest effective dose.

has tehy doc tried treating it from a neuro prospective–if not –time to get a new doc-

those meds have minimal or no effect on FMS—it is a disorder of teh central nervous system…you need to target the pain signals from teh brain to teh body–

not teh signals from the body to teh brain–which is was narcotics do

promising treatments include lyruica, cymbalta–meds that target NERVE pain

if teh narcotics are workign–i woudl nbe concerned taht the diagnosis is wrong..
