Took my 3 year old to the pediatrician for what started out as a cold weeks ago that has ended up in what he says is a sinus infection. He has been on amoxicillin for 5 days now and I haven’t seen much improvement, except his nose isn’t constantly running. Still has a sore throat and congested head and is very very irritable. Any suggestions?

  1. It is likely that the bacteria in the sinus cavity is not sensitive to Amoxicillin. There are classes of antibiotics that are responsive to different types of bacteria. Although Amoxillin didn’t work, another penicillin derivative might, or you may need to try another antibiotic class entirely.

The next step is to have your Pediatrician call in another antibiotic for your son. I’m hoping the Pediatrician did a culture; therefore, he can prescribe an antibiotic exactly specific to the infection that should knock it right out. I would call the on-call service of the office, and let the know the situation.

    Best of luck.

  3. Any antibiotic needs time to work on the infection. That time limit is usually half of the time the perscription is perscribed for… 10 days would start seeing results in 5 days, etc. If after that period you do not see results, then it is possible that that particular antibiotic is not a good one to kill that infection. This happened to me with a larnyx infection. I was put on 3 different antibiotics for it and used them faithfully for the entire perscription time limit and still no results. I was then sent to a ENT specialist who cultured the infection by using a scope to find and take a culture. The culture it to see what will actually kill it and after I was put on that particular antibiotic, I was well after two complete perscriptions of it. It took a second perscript due to the fact that the infection was so bad by that time.
