One of my family members has to take two types of blood pressure medicines. One is called Atenolol and the other is called Cozaar. Why are two types of blood pressure medicines necessary?
Why are some people prescribed two types of blood pressure medications?

Because doctors don’t know any better.
They don’t understand how the cardiovascular system works – or how it’s controlled and regulated./
Simple, but quite unbelievable, … isn’t it? Yet it’s true.
There are different ways that blood pressure can be controlled. Each of these medications controls blood pressure a different way. Atenolol is a beta adrenergic receptor blocker and causes blood vessels to dialate and Cozaar is an ACE inhibitor and prevents the angiotensin enzyme from making angiotensin which constricts blood vessels.
Different blood pressure medicines suppress different stress hormones that cause your heart to work harder ( raise blood pressure). Some also tend to regulate heartbeat. In this case Atenolol is a beta blocker and Cozaar prevents the constriction of blood vessels.
Taking multiple medications is common and I know standard practice for some heart problems and are prescribed based on patient survival rates.
