A combination of Lantus and Avandamet may give him more consistent blood sugars during the day.

I’d suggest that he do finger sticks fairly often during the first few days at work, to see where the sugar is running. Just in case, have him carry some glucose tablets. Then, let his doctor know the readings.

As you know, consistently "normal" blood sugars help prevent/minimize the consequences of diabetes.

Good luck.

Im a RN and diabetic, I have been switched numerous times between insulins. I did take the Lantus insulin for over a year to be truthful i didnt work for me but it may do wonders for your husband. Lantus is a long acting insulin that maintains a "normal" blood glucose if memory serves me correctly. I have also been on the Avandamet which is a combonation of Avandia and metformin, that didnt work for me either. I have what is known as brittle diabetes. Very hard to control. My suggestion is to monitor the blood glucose closely. Each time the blood is checked keep a log write it down for the doctor to see. Husband needs to check his blood at least 4 times per day and at any time he just doesn’t "feel" right. The doctor should have went into detail about this change over. Ask questions if you don’t understand thats what that doctor gets paid for. I am hard on doctors that don’t explain what they are doing. They just write out the scripts and send you on your merry way. I am sorry that he/she done you this way. Insulin is a scary drug and nothing should be taken lightly about it.
