Whats the difference between adderall and adderall xr?

I was on adderall 20mg, but my doctor switched me to adderall 20mg xr. What’s the difference?

Adderall XR contains a mixture of four different amphetamine salts. They are metabolized at different rates; therefore the extended-release form of the medication acts longer in the system and has a milder action as compared to single-salt amphetamine preparations.

XR is eXtended Release. Get it? XR?

xr stands for extended release which means instead of getting the whole 20mg at once, the pills take longer to be absorbed into your bloodstream making it last longer.
