Over the counter pain relievers have a problem in that after you take a certain amount they no longer have additional pain relieving power. The reason is they work by blocking certain enzymes. Once that enzyme is completely blocked, you can’t block it any more.
However, different pain medications have different mechanisms of action. So you can combine them. 1600 mg isn’t going to do any more than 1000mg of tylenol, is the issue. But, take both tylenol AND ibuprophen and you get more pain relieving power.
Why don’t you call your doctor and see if you can have a refill? They generally under-prescribe opiates and are usually happy to call in a couple of extra pills while you recover.
