Nothing weird will happen, you’ll just experience some of the side effects that are common with that medication, and they can be pretty severe, and since it’s prescribed for mood, it could affect your own moods, and you could experience the same withdrawal symptoms a peson who is prescribed it would experience when they suddenly stop taking it. It’s really nothing to play around with, and it doesn’t provide any pleasant feelings such as a high. Most people who are prescribed it in higher dosages do not think it’s pleasant at first, but they’re willing to take it in order to be more stable in their moods. It takes a while to get used to the medication such that the side effects are not as severe, and more tolerable.

Depakote (or Depakene – Valproic Acid) is used either as an anti-convulsant or as a mood stabilizer for those with mental health issues like severe moodswings. The dosage to control convulsions (epileptic seizures) is generally lower than the dosage to control mood, so if it had a significant negative effect on neurological stability at higher dosages, they probably wouldn’t use it for moodswings. But there are some pretty serious side effects, such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, dry mouth, etc. Not pleasant, and I’ve known people who have started on Depakote who couldn’t tolerate it too well. It could conceivably cause seizures in small populations as well.

From Drugs.com, here’s their list of common side effects:

Change in appetite; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; hair loss; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach cramps or pain; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weakness; weight changes.

Why would you want to take it if you don’t need it, BTW?

Why would you even want to?

Well, it would probably have a very numbing effect on someone who didn’t need it. It is used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder, two illnesses that have over-firing neurons in common. So if you don’t have a chemical imbalance that causes your neurons to misfire, I imagine that it may reduce neuronal activity. People who take mood stabilizers often report feeling like a zombie at high doses.

You’d also gain weight. I know lots of people who have reported that as a side effect. You also run the risk of liver and kidney damage. People who take Depakote have to have routine liver function tests. You also risk developing Metabolic Syndrome, a disease much like diabetes.
