Is there a statin medicine which would work as well as Crestor?

1. Crestor is a member of a class of drugs called statins aka HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. There are many statins on the market. They are all believed to be equally effective when used in equivalent doses. Pravastatin and Lovastatin are generic and currently on the $4 formulary at Walmart and Target. Higher doses will be required though to produce the same effect. For example, Crestor 5 mg is equivalent to 80 mg of Pravastatin and Lovastatin. Unfortunately the highest doses of these two is 80 mg, therefore if you are on more than 5 mg then you would need another type of statin. Other statins include Simvastatin (Zocor) and Atorvastatin (Lipitor), which are more potent. For example, Simvastatin 80 mg is equivalent to Crestor 10 mg. Neither is generic yet, but it may be cheaper for you. Discuss this with your doctor.

2. I’m over 65 and in that horrid donut hole which means I have to pay full price for drugs. I called crestor (got number online) and they sent me a card which allows me to pay ONLY $25.00 for 30 pills. They asked me questions on the phone befor sending the card. You do not have to be low income but you have to take their survey on the phone. It’s worth it.
   I know drs usually say generic pills are just as good but my doc said better to take crestor because I got leg cramps from generic.

4. Crestor is the strongest of all the statins. Depending on the dose, you might find an equivalent dose of simvastatin. The second strongest statin is Lipitor. and it will be going generic in another year or so.
