Is the drug ABILIFY otherwise known as aripiprazole safe for a diabetic?

computer stressed. asked: My son has been prescribed the above drug. He has Prader -Willi Syndrome. Does anyone know if this is safe for diabetics as the details say about diabetics.?

Your doctor has to know this answer and he knows your son is diabetic and would not have prescribed it if it were not safe to be used under these conditions. All medications are prescribed, taking into consideration all other medications and existing health conditions.
I would say your doctor is always a good place to start or since he prescribed it and you aren’t sure a pharmacist. Diabetes is a side effect. It can make you hyperglycemic so I can’t see why they would prescribe that unless that is the only alternative….The FDA made them relabel the drug over it so you know that would scare me personally. But I would talk to your doctor.
Abilify can be used in diabetics I believe but people who are diabetic who opt to use antipsychotic medications like Abilify have to carefully monitor their blood sugar levels to make sure it doesn’t make blood sugar control worse. I’m no doctor (or psychiatrist) so don’t quote me on it but that’s what I believe the case is on this issue. Speak with the prescribing doctor. He/she should be able to tell you more information on how to properly monitor your son’s blood sugar while on the medication. I wish you best of luck.
