NO! Ibuprofen is not safe. Rimadyl is expensive but if it was effective ask your vet about Tramadol. Some vets consider it a controlled substance but it is incredibly effective – and cheap. Rimadyl for my 8 yr old shepard is $94 month – tramadol is $16!!
If you must use an otc drug for comfort – aspirin. But if he’s been on rimadyl there is a week (7day) waiting period before it is safe to give the aspirin. (you have to make sure the rimadyl is out of his system)
You really should ask a vet or look it up on the net. Many human drugs are fatal to animals.
***** Please note ,, I found this on another Question and Answer about Ibuprophen and pets***********
Bufferin (aspirin) can be given to dogs for pain. Be very careful with NSAIDs (Aleve, Ibuprophen, etc.) because I killed my daughter’s little dog by giving him ibuprophen. It shut down his kidneys. Tylenol will definitely kill a dog. Aspirin is the only thing I would feel safe to use.
go to the vet
no are you stupid if you give that do ibuprofin all he will do is make it come out the other end.if you kno wat i mean.lol!
NO IT WILL KILL HIM.DOGS CANNOT TAKE IBEPROPHEN.THEY CAN TAKE BABY ASPRINS THOUGH.MY DOG HAD HEART FAILURE AND WAS IN LOTS OF PAIN,THE VET SAID TO GET BABY ASPRIN AND MY DOG FELT MUCH BETTER ..GET SOME BABY ASPRIN AND IT EVEN TASTES GOOD TO THEM AND IT MELTS IN THEIR MOUTH….GOOD LUCK HOPE YOUR DOG FEELS BETTER SOON…
I don’t think you should experiment on your dog. Ask your vet for some affordable alternatives or some drug samples they get for free from the drug companies.
Have you asked your vet? I wouldn’t until the vet okays it.
Ibuprofen is NOT a safe medication for a dog. Occasionally, BUFFERED aspirin can be given, in an appropriate dose, every 12 hours…not every 4-6 hours like people are able to take it.
You might also look into a Glucosamine supplement if you haven’t already. Glucosamine can be helpful when taken regularly.
NO! absolutely not! it can cause liver disease and death.
please do NOT give ibuprofen to a dog!
the safer way to go is to give nutrient supplements that help the arthritis and helps HEAL the joints and reduce inflammation. this would be glucosamine and chondrotin, as well as omega 3 fatty acid oil supplements.
NO. Ask your vet about natural supplements for your dog.
Why r u asking that question on yahoo Q&A!!?????????Just GO TO THE VET FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, never. Ibuprofen is poisonous to dogs. You might be able to use asprin, check with the vet for the correct dosage.
Yes in fact it would be toxic to him. Talk to your vet about other alternatives.
check with the vet. It could be disasterus if you get the drug or dose wrong, brufenn has nasty side effect so check first
no do not give your dog ibuprofen, my girlfriend had a dog who was about 12 that had the same problems when we asked the vet he said that asprian would be okay but ibuprofen would cause worse problems.
My dog is 14 and suffers from the same I give him glucosimine tablets from the health shop, pet store, woolworths or coles supermarket.
they cost $29.00 and you get 200 tabs one or two tabs per day.
Also you can use acupuncture, works really well, need about 4 treatments 60.00 a pop but also worth it.
Here is good info from Dr. Mike, DVM on managing pain.

You would be likely to help him more by giving him supplements of chondroitin and glucosamine, available at any pet supply shop..
Don’t do it; the may be a canine equivalent but the stuff you buy at the chemist is meant for people. You’ll have no idea of the correct dose and you really don’t want to over dose him.
Silly s*d!!! – would you take medication yourself that your vet had prescribed for your dog??? – Of course not, so why would you think that medication prescribed to you by your Doctor is alright to give to your pet???.
Stop being a cheapskate and seek advice on this from your vet BEFORE you give your dog ANY medication at all
I have given it to my dog but only half a tablet at a time. when you get tabs from the vet not only are they usually the same as ours but also they are 3 times the amount to pay for . have you tried WHITE HORSE OILS it is a linament is smells very strong you rub it in it is excellent my dogs r working dogs so have had to try quite a few remodies . good luck x
I asked my vet this a couple of years ago (about my poor old aging GSD) he went absolutely ballistic at me, never ever give your dog Ibuprofen!
I would like to add here that I know my vet well (over 30 years) so he never minces words with me! I trust him implicitly,
think about it how big is your dog, the dose should always be checked by your vet, you could overdose the dog, and ibuprofen can cause upset tummies in us , so think what it could do do a dog,if you have a pdsa near you have a word with them they may be able to help, add codliver oil and primrose oil to his diet, it will take a while before you see a benifit but it compliments the prescrinbed medication, and in mild arthritse dose help a lot, on its own, but always check with the vet .
Use aspirin only and their is glucosamine for dogs on the shelf for these kinds of issues also.
NOPE, TAKE IT TO THE VETS! get it some medication especially for arthritis!. never give your dog anything without your vets say so.
Definitely not. Ibuprofen is for humans not dogs. Go and speak to your vet and explain the cost is too much for rimadyl and see if there is an alternative.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
A vet has told us that we can give our dog (west highland white terrior) ibuprofen every now and again as long as you dont give it them all the time! like every day.
No it can cause major problems, internal bleeding I think. I once gave some to my dog ‘cos he had a bad back, when I took him to the vet and told him what I’d done he gave me a pescription and I had to get an antidote from the chemist….even more expense!
never give ibuprophen to dogs it is toxic to them.only give what your vet recommends.vets do cost but ibuprophen could cost your dogs life.
