Is it okay to take ambien and benadryl at the same time?

by Admin on November 5, 2009

My psychiatrist told me to take benadryl and ambien at the same time, because ambien alone does not make me sleep more than five hours a night. Is this Safe?

According to the FDA Medication Guide for Ambien, you shouldn’t take Ambien with other drugs that can make you sleepy. MedlinePlus says you should ask your doctor before taking benadryl if you’re also taking sleeping pills. I would definitely ask your regular doctor, or at least the pharmacist who fills your Ambien, before taking both.

Yes. Ambien is a gabaergic medication while benadryl is antihistaminergic/cholinergic. . . . if both are taken at therapuetic dosages, you’ll be fine assuming you don’t have any other contraindications to these meds, i.e. you are allergic to these meds, you have prostate problems etc. . . Get some sleep!. .

I usually take Benadryl if I want to sleep. If you want to try it, make sure you have a full night’s sleep ahead of you. And see how you feel when you wake up.

Yes that is fine.

You are in the wrong place to be asking this question. Only your pharmacist or doctor is qualified to answer it.

You tell him to write it down and give you the instructions so you have a record of this. Didn’t Heath Ledger take Ambien and other stuff because he could not sleep?? Benadryl alone knocks me out. I would probably go to sleep and wake up on the other side of the moon.

Yes, both drugs act in different ways. The benadryl will last about 4 to 6 hours and will enhance the effects of the Ambien causing the Ambien to work better and longer.
