If you have had only one atrial fibrilation episode and are on coumadin, when can you stop this medication?

by Admin on December 19, 2009

This episode happened almost a year ago and I am anxious to stop taking coumadin. The only other issue is high blood pressure and I am on medication for that.

You should talk to your doctor. but alot of times once you start a blood thinner they keep you on them.

there are MANY blood thinners out there. You can talk to your doctor about possibly going on an aspirin regiment instead – but the key would be TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!

Good luck to you.

First, never stop this medication without your doctor’s knowledge. Next, talk with you doctor about tapering you off this medication and see what happens. If the atrial fibrillation returns (I assume you are in a sinus rhythm now), then you will need to be on this medication for the rest of your life. You do not want to take the risk of having a stroke from the small clots that are formed in your heart when you have atrial fibrillation and with your high blood pressure, it puts you doubly at risk for a stroke. Hopefully, your BP medication keeps your blood pressure below 120/80. Visit with your doctor about options that you might have.

Discuss your wishes with you doc (cardiologist). If nothing is wrong with your heart, so no heart valve problems, no enlarged heart atria, we usually stop the anti coagulation after 6 months of regular sinus rhythm. Other blood thinners do exist, but trials have shown that coumadin is superior to aspirin to prevent clots from you heart shooting to your brain causing a stroke.
I assume that your blood pressure is well controlled.
