though I never have breathing problems. I have bronchitis(?) with phlegm buildup that causes me to cough and almost vomit. I have never really understood what is wrong with me.

One of the reasons you have COPD is that your airways overreact to virtually everything. They get swollen and the goblet cells produce too much mucous usually out of proportion to the stimulus. They also constrict making air movement more difficult and uneven. Normally ventilation is evenly distributed throughout the lungs. With COPD The air flow is uneven according to how much mucous is where and how much bronchoconstriction is taking place and where. This sets up underventilation of the areas that are essentially blocked. This allows bacteria to grow if there are any there and the airways and alveoli lose there function and can shut down. That’s why your doctor has you on Proventil and Flovent. Trying to keep your airways open and not inflamed. And also to keep your mucous thin so it’s easier to cough up. The problem being that you can’t get enough air behind the mucous to push from the back and expel it. The mucous that you don’t cough up simply gets thicker and thicker and just becomes more difficult. You must keep yourself well hydrated. Lots of water. to help with this problem. So you can see why they get frustrated with patients who continue to smoke which just causes the very thing your trying to avoid.
God bless.

Your lungs are overly sensitive to natural and man-made pollutants—likely been this way your whole life, but only NOW does the condition occur more often. Doctors used to label it the "coughing crud".

Your best approach is to keep a very tidy clean house and buy a couple of inexpensive, but effective air cleaning machines along your home; there’s even a few small model air cleaners for cars as well.

If you smoke, you’re not helping yourself and it’s best you quit.

Typically, climatic changes during the early Spring and Fall months are difficulut and you are pressed hard to avoid industrial pollutants. Do keep yourself well hydrated and ask your doctor for breathing treatment meds FREE of steroids.
