Crestor is filtered and processed through your liver. You should have liver enzymes drawn every 6 months as well as your cholesterol. This will make sure that the medication itself is not harming your liver while trying to lower your cholesterol. As for muscles, a common side effect of a statin medication is muscle cramping. There has been a statin, Baycol, taken off of the market in the past for causing permanent damage to muscles, resulting in kidney problems. This occured in a very small amount of the population of patients that were taking it. If you are not having leg cramps, then the Crestor is not bothering your muscles. If you are, you can ask your doctor about Zetia, a new cholesterol medication that is not a statin and has had good results with people who are sensitive to statins. Bottom line is that a statin is the best route to lower your cholesterol if you can tolerate it. Your cholesterol being high is more risky then the medication itself.
make sure that if you’re of Asian heritage that you avoid Crestor. Read the manufacturer’s label re: this. Get liver enzymes tested also creatinine levels in your urine. Muscle pain and weakness esp. in the large muscles is a serious sign. Also hair loss is a side effect of statins. Be sure to supplement with CoQ10 an enzyme in your muscles that statins deplete (also naturally lowers with age). The heart muscle is rich in CoQ10 and there can be problems if you take statins for the long term. MD’s gen. recommend 200-300 mg /day of the CoQ10. Good book on statins is by a Dr. Sinatra. The mantra is "go low and go slow". Not so sure I agree that statins are the best and only way to lower cholesterol. More important than total cholesterol is the ratio of LDL/HDL and your trigylercides. Also, expanded lipid profiles interpreted by a lipid specialist is the best way to get a picture of what truly is going on. There are many diet/exercise/herbal/stress mgt ways to control/normalize your cholesterol besides statins.
Check the links below. Some people tolerate these some don’t; some people can take one brand but not another.
First read the Medline Plus link – it’s geared to patients. Ask your doctor about it, and if you aren’t satisfied with the answers, you can refuse the medicine.
