my boyfriend was admitted overnight on sunday at the hospital psych ward for basically just snapping. he has been diagnosed as bipolar for a couple months now and when he left the hospital monday they prescribed him Geodon. does anyone know how good this medication works? hes been a lot nicer since being discharged but is still having his "ideas". does this medication take a while to start working and if so how will i know if it is?

Geodon is an anti psychotic (which doesn;t mean that he is psychotic) and it works very well on the manic side of Bipolar. I am on Geodon and it keep me nice and mellow…..
While everyone’s different, Geodon was not the medication of choice for me, but it is FDA approved for bipolar disorder. It will take about 4 – 6 weeks to see the full effects of the medication. It’s proposed to work by lowering dopamine and serotonin in the brain. You’ll probably see a change in his mood and/or behavior when the medicine fully "kicks in". I wish you/him the best of luck with the Geodon. I hope it works for him.
