They are similar drugs. Ativan acts quickly and is more potent. It also wears off quicker. Valium acts slowly, lasts a long time, and takes more for the same effect. Valium is broken down in your body into other chemicals that have similar effects, hence it lasts longer. I will say that when I dose Ativan, I usually start at 1 or 2 mg, and when I dose Valium I usually start at 5 or 10mg. You can’t give an exact answer. They are similar drugs.
