my new dr is weaning me off of zyprexa 20mg that i’ve been on for 7 years. i was gaining too much weight with it. so far, it’s been a week on abilify and i’m depressed, moody, and snapping at people. i want to give abilify a good chance to work so, i’m not giving up yet.

Oh. I tried abilifiy and it made me anxious and hostile. I snapped at people all the time. I had to stop taking it. I noticed the side effects right away.

Since you are switching from one antipsychotic to another, there should not be “much” time for it to work, because your system is already used to that type of medication.

If you continue with side effects, tell your doctor. I know ALOT of people that had to stop Abilify.

I take:

Lamictal 200 mg (mood stabilizer)
Geodon 40 mg (for mania)
Abilify 10 mg (for depression)

I was on Geodon alone.. and I was not manic whatsoever but I was very depressed. Then I was put on Lamictal with Abilify instead of Geodon.

I started to become so agitated while on the Abilify that I began skipping classes in college because I just couldn’t concentrate. I begged my doctor to put me back on Geodon. And it worked out well.

I’m not suicidally depressed anymore thanks to the Abilify. Abilify isn’t a magic bullet because there are still lots of improvements that I need to make, but the worst thoughts are definitely gone. Like it doesn’t make me happy, but Abilify cuts out the most sad thoughts.

Overall, I think I’m doing better with the Geodon-Abilify combination rather than either of them separately.

Also these medications are all weight neutral. No weight gain for me.

I know some people who have tried abilify and have had similiar reactions that you are having, increased moodiness and the snapping at people thing, I’ve never tried it because of those apparent side effects, I have been taking zyprexa and I think it works great for me, so far i haven’t really experienced any weight gain, and i am on 20 mg a night, so i think i’ll be sticking with zyprexa.
