How long does it take CLINDAMYCIN to clear up Abcesses?

by Admin on March 14, 2010

Ive had a constant problem with abcesses for a few years and the doctor gave me something before and didnt work. Now my doctor gave me Clindamycin 3 times daily for 10 days. How Long till it starts clearing up the abcesses? Also is this medication gonna help cure this problem for good?

Since it was given for 10 days, it appears your doctor thinks it will work in that time. If it doesn’t, go back to get more information. 10 days seem short to me, it may take longer.Have you had a culture to see what bacteria are involved? Sometimes abscesses will require opening and draining. Difficult problem with many treatment options and unlikely to be "cured" with 10 days of clindamycin.

If you have an abscess, the main treatment is draining the abscess and removing the pus contents. Then an antibiotic for 10 to 14 days is appropriate. Clindamycin might be a good choice, depending upon what germ was responsible for the abscess and its particular antibiotic sensitivities. However, there is a high risk of developing bacterial resistance to taking clindamycin, by itself, so caution must be taken if that’s the only antibiotic that you’re on. Make sure you follow up with your doctor.
