How long can a dog safely stay on Medrol?

by Admin on September 17, 2009

I’ve looked all over the internet for an answer and can’t find it. I’m just wondering if my dog is on 24 mg /day of Medrol…how long can she safely stay on it before it starts to really affect her organs?

PS She’s on Medrol for Lupus. The Medrol is helping her sustain the symptoms of this disease.

The Medrol can be fairly safe, but as like in people, in long term use, it can lead to brittle bones, and kidney and liver problems. It is probably safer to keep her on the steroids for the Lupus than not at this point.

As long as your vet keeps checking on your dog through blood work and the occasional x-ray to check for bone strength and density then your dog will be ok.
Medrol is a steroid.
