Although it is not as addictive as say Lortab or Xanax, Ambien does carry some risk of dependence (i.e. you may not be able to get to sleep without it after awhile). It is nowhere near as abused as the aforementioned drugs either. The main side effects you may notice at first are feeling tired the next day, feeling dizzy or a headache. People have also reported sleep walking or even sleep eating or driving while taking this type of drug, but that's relatively rare. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a prescription for it if you talk to your MD. Ambien CR is not available in a generic and may cost you quite a bit, but plain Ambien (zolpidem) comes in generic and would save you quite a bit if that's an issue.

its not harmless. as far as sleeping aids go, its relatively safe. a lot of people have side effects like nausea +/- vomiting, amnesia, hallucinations, etc. for some people, the standard dosing of ambien is just too strong. they say you should allow 7-8 hours for sleep, but i recommend more like 10 hours from when you take the pill until you have to be up, at least at first. the drug hangover from any sleeping pill can be really detrimental to your morning routine.

that having been said, its not hard to get a prescription. if you have a doctor that you see on any kind of regular basis, then go, tell him/her what's going on, and ask if there is a medication that can help. if you don't want to bother, tylenol PM works just about as well.

Zolpidem is used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep). Zolpidem belongs to a class of medications called sedative-hypnotics. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow sleep.
Please see the web pages for more details on Zolpidem (generic name) Ambien (brand name).
