How do I get my 5-week baby to take his Zantac for his reflux?

by Admin on September 4, 2010

The Zantac tastes really awful even after the pharmacist flavored it with grape flavoring. My baby cries when I administer the medicine and I can’t imagine doing this 3 times a day for the next 4-6 months!

We had the same problem. First of all, who was the GENIUS who thought MINT was a good flavor base for an infant??? What a dope, huh? And the grape only barely covers that flavor up. Ick, ick, ick!

After some trial and error and asking my doc and pharmacist if this was ok, I found something that worked for us. I would get the Zantac as is, mint flavor, no grape. I’d pull up the correct dosage into the syringe and then pull up as much apple juice into the syringe as it could hold. The apple juice diluted the Zantac and was more palatable for the baby. Also aim the syringe into the back of baby’s cheek and release it slowly, going in 2 or 3 tries (rather than all at once).

Another option is to see if there is a compounding pharmacy in your area. At the compounding pharm, they make the med from scratch and can leave out the mint & only add the flavoring you want.

Hope that helps & good luck :)

Note for Allison R: Infant reflux is actually different from adult reflux. Infant reflux is due to the esophagus being immature and usually is resolved by 6 months. Adult reflux is caused by abnormalities in the lower esophageal sphincter, esophageal hernias, esophageal contractions or stomach distension (overeating). Occasionally it is caused by too much stomach acid. I would caution against giving an infant a soda compound. It will likely lead to MORE spitting up and the sodium is really bad for their immature kidneys. Just FYI :)

well put the meds in a bottle with his formula but only about an ounce and then they should never know the difference but do this around feeding time and have another bottle ready to substitute when the other is gone good luck

TRY TO MIX IT WITH SOME ORANGE JUICE OR WATER BUT FIRST ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU CAN DO,
ANYWAY YOU MUST GIVE IT EVEN IF HE CRIES A LOT
IS FOR ITS OWN GOOD AND HEALTH, THAT WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK OF EVERY TIME YOU GIVE IT.

Did you try a soy based formula (assuming you don’t breast feed). 2 out of my 3 children had a big problem with milk based formula so I switched and within a week I noticed a huge difference with their acid reflux problems. Ask your pediatrician.

I wouldn’t mix it with his/her formula. If it makes the formula taste nasty it may affect how the baby eats all day. I used to do this, use the syringe type of measurer, fill it to correct amount, while baby is eating sneak it in the side of the cheek, gently squeeze in till it is all gone. Then baby doesn’t even realize they are getting it.This works if you are nursing too! I did it while I nursed.

Hi, i also have to give my 10 week old son zantac ever since 4 weeks of age.
At first it was IMPOSSIBLE, what i did get into his mouth he would spit out again.
I rang the peadiatrician and also the chemist and also my local doctor and its perfectly safe to add it to their formula, which i do.
First make up a bottle with about 30mls in it and add zantac to this, to make sure they get full amount, then give them the rest of their bottle .
Goodluck :)

the baby cries because it burns as it goes down. my little girl had this and didn’t outgrow it til she was 21months. try putting the zantac in just a small amount of his formula. also they had my little girl on riglin at the same time she had no trouble with it she would smack her lips because it tasted good. i would always give her the zantac then immediately give the riglin to soothe it as it went down. you may also want to have you a bottle of mylecon drops at hand because babys with reflux tend to get the collic. and they cry alot with it. but mylecon drops are a God send to baby and mom it eases that pain for them quick and they can rest. ( i know it burns because i told her pediatrician that she would cry everytime i gave it to her and it smells so strong. the doctor told me its because it burns you try some i did and it does but they have to have it.) so i would put hers in a small amount of formula she would have to be able to take it all. my little girl had it real bad she would take less than half of a half ounce and she would projectile from one side of the room to the other. and it would be like she had taken 2 full 8 ounce bottles. she got phenumonia, from the vomiting and had to have a heart moniter and breathing treatments every 4 hours. she was our 3rd child at first the baby doctor she first saw told me there was nothing wrong with her she was gaining weight take her home i left straight from his office and took her to the hospital they did some tests said she was allergic to iron and changed her formula i waited a 2 days for that formula to help and she started wheezing so i took her to a different baby doctor and found out that it was reflux and she was hospilized that day over phenumia and to treat the reflux. she ended up on nutramigen because its mostly digested and a tablespoon of rice cereal to each ounce. good luck and best wishes, hope your little one outgrows this soon. they have advanced in the time when my litttle girl was a baby shes 14 now. i have also heard of mothers switching to goats milk help/cure reflux . i even tried to change and breast-feed it didn’t help her but i have heard of these things helping others.
