At my job as a pharmacy assistant, when asking a customer is they would prefer the generic brand, the customer stated that she would not, as she would rather the extra money she pays to go to the manufactorer so they can continue research and development on pharmaceuticals
is this a fair statement to make??

Not particularly. Private companies do do drug research, however a massive chunk is performed by government run institutions, development labs in universities, and of course the generics developers.
While it is true that they should be funded and supported, the significant markup (in some cases as much as 20-30x more) does not justify the developmental fee.
