Generic drug for Effexor?

by Admin on October 17, 2009

I have been on Effexor for a few years now. I recently tried the generic drug (it just became available in my area) with disastrous results.

I’d like to hear about other people’s experience with same. Thanks.

It’s unclear if you are referring to the regular or extended-release capsule. The regular form has been available as generic for some time, but the extended-release capsule is still under patent by Wyeth as Effexor XR. However, I believe there is an extended-release version available outside the US, but I don’t know the details.

It is important to realize that side effects can vary based on the delivery system (the pill), not just the medication (the chemical). One can have side effects from the regular pill versus the extended-release capsule, so this would not be surprising if you switched from one to another.

If you are using the generic extended-release capsule (in Canada), it is also important to realize that the extended-release delivery system is not required to be the same as the Wyeth extended-release capsule, only the medication. Thus, there can even be differences between the delivery systems once they turn generic, even if it is also "extended-release." In a sense, you are more likely to get consistency between a generic and brand medication if they are both NOT extended-release.

Finally, the amount of the medication in one tablet can vary slightly more in generic medications than in branded medications. Practically, for antidepressants, however, this makes little difference.

Good luck!

you do understand that "generic" means that any company can make it whereas "namebrand" means only the company that invented it makes it?

your "generic" might be made by a completely different company than someone elses "generic"

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/venlafax.htm Try that for general information. Best of luck to you with Effexor. It has been the only anti depressant I’ve tried, and Geshhh I’ve tried close to every one out there it seems, that I had troubles with. I was very sensitive to stimuli, and it felt like my hair was standing on end. Hope it helps you.
