Does Clomid cause you to start your period?

by Admin on September 7, 2010

My husband and I are looking to start a family but we had some questions. I have PCOS and don’t have a period at all. We have heard great things about Clomid but does it start your period or do you need something else to start it first? If so what do you use to start it? I want to have as much information as possible and we want to start conceiving as soon as possible isnce he is in the army. :D Thank you in advance!

You are not getting periods because you are not ovulating, so your cycles go on forever. In this case, you would take progesterone in the form of Provera for about 10-14 days. Anywhere from 2-14 days after your LAST pill you will get a period, which begins a new cycle. Clomid is an ovulation inducing drug. You would then start the Clomid usually on Day 5 (Day 1 is the first day of your period) and take it for 5 days. About 7-10 days after your LAST Clomid pill you should ovulate. Once ovulation takes place, you are guaranteed a period about 14 days later (unless, of course, you get pregnant). If you don’t conceive, your doctor will have you repeat the Clomid again on your new cycle. If you don’t ovulate with Clomid, your doctor will give you Provera again to force a period and give you a higher dose of Clomid on the next cycle.

Hope that helps.

Clomid does NOT start menstruation, it causes ovulation. After a month of taking it, if it did cause ovulation and you did not conceive you would then start you "period". If it doesn’t work initially most doctors will raise your dosage by 50mg a month until you reach 150 mg or so.
Make sure to write down any questions and ask you doc even if it seems silly. You should feel comfortable and well informed.
Hope everything goes well for you. Good luck!

Generally, they give you Provera to start your period first, just so you know which days to take the Clomid. The Clomid makes you ovulate.

I have PCOS too. My doctor always gave me Provera first to start a period, then he would give clomid after that. I did 6 cycles of clomid and all of them failed. I have heard many success stories though. I had other problems that was keeping me from conceiving on clomid. I finally conceived on Femara, which is pretty much the same as clomid, but some women respond to it better than they do to clomid. Also I had to have IUI’s to get pregnant. I am now almost 18 weeks pregnant. Good luck to you.
