Does atenolol work for stage fright? How long before performance/speech should you take it? How much?

P.S.
This is for extreme anxiety/panic physical symptoms, not emotional/mental symptoms. Positive thinking, practice, and breathing would not work.

if you haven’t taken atenolol before, i would never take i t the first time before a performance.

it makes some people really sleepy, some a little dizzy.
My husband can’t think if he takes them – and they make him depressed, too.

Not sure if Atenolol or alcohol helps, but a ‘positive attitude’ sure helps. Every single greatest speaker on earth have all had stage fear. But their sheer passion and enthusiasm and a positive outlook overcame all these. Drop the atenolol, look into your audience’s eyes, get it going. All the best!

I don’t think it’s the best idea to get into the habit of taking drugs for stage fright, whether it works or not. The more you go on stage, the easier it will get. Before you go on just try to do something relaxing. For example, I was in a drama class when I was a freshman and one of the activities that we did to loosen up and relax was to lay on the floor and concentrate on relaxing our whole bodies, one part at a time. You start with your feet and just pretend that they’re made of butter and they’re slowly melting. I know it sounds kind of weird, but it actually is very relaxing. Another thing that helps when you’re about to perform something, or give a speech anything else, is to practice a lot. The more you practice the better prepared you’ll feel and that will calm you down. Also, breathing slower helps to lower your heart rate as well, which will also calm you down. When it comes down to it, it’s all about mind over matter. Just have confidence in yourself and you’ll do fine. I believe that you can do it!

atenolol is a serious medication and do not use it casually. ask your doctor for a mild sedative like calmpose or minimum strength valium. i take valium when i get on a flight to keep me calm yet alert. a 2mg tablet works for 4-5 hours so if you take it couple of hours before your performance, it might work. ask your doctor first. such advice should not be asked on this site.
