You CAN get pregnant while taking Dilantin, but you SHOULDN’T. It’s a category D drug, and is a known teratogen (that is, it’s known to cause birth defects). The birth defects that result from Dilantin use in pregnancy can be severe, and range from facial deformities to mental retardation.

Most doctors would recommend against taking it during pregnancy, and those that do prescribe it usually order the lowest effective dose possible.

If you are trying to conceive, you should talk to your doctor about the ramifications of that or any other medication.
