Can you catch a cold while taking the antibiotic Cipro?

by Admin on March 14, 2010

I have been taking Cipro for a sinus infection for almost a week now and I just woke up with a cold? hom is that possible? Shouldn’t I be resistant to everything while on this really strong antibiotic?
I also have a low grade 99.9 fever

I am a Pharmacist and Cipro is a low grade broad spectrum antibiotic. The antibiotic is working on killing the bad bacteria as well as your antibodies which help fight off a cold. You could also not have a sinus infection and just have a low grade flu. Where then the antibiotics will have no affect. Hope i helped you

Cipro is a broad spectrum antibiotic for several kinds of bacteria. The common cold is caused by different viruses. Cipro has no action against viruses.

Ok, because I have kids that go to school/daycare I deal with colds and infections and antibiotics all the time. I had the same question a couple of times, here goes:

Because antibiotics deal with INFECTIONS and the cold is a VIRUS, the antibiotics do nothing to help with that. Have you ever noticed that viruses just have to run their course? Basically because they are not bacterial , and thus cannot be stopped/killed by antibiotics. So there you go… antibiotics have nothing to do with viruses, they kill bacterial infections…
