Can you be on Depakote 500 mg and smoke marijuana?

by Admin on December 18, 2009

My boyfriend has never smoked marijuana, he is starting to want to try it. I am a little worried because he has a very minor case of epilepsy and is taking Depakote 500 mg. Will smoking Marijuana do any harm?

It depends on him, really. If his seizures are under control and he’s consistent in his meds, he may be able to ease into it. Some people with epilepsy can have seizures, but more often than not marijuana actually acts as an anticonvulsant. I’ve even used it when I was having a bunch of absence seizures and had already had 2 Complex Partials that day in order to stop them from coming so frequently and harshly and to relieve the headaches that I get after a seizure. If all else fails, call the pharmacist. You’d do best with a pharmacist that’s a bit older…. at least 39-40. Any younger and they’re new enough to the profession that they’ll be afraid to give you any real info other than the usual "don’t do it because it’s drugs and illegal and bad" speech. The older ones are a bit more relaxed and they realise that saying "don’t do it" isn’t going to make you not do it.

Call a pharmacy and ask the question. It’s anonymous and they should be able to tell you.

If your boyfriend takes Depakote for epilepsy or something similar, he should not smoke pot because pot triggers seizures in patients with a history of seizures.

If he takes Depakote for Bipolar disorder or something similar, he’s ok. It may actually help with his Bipolar, if this is the case.
