I have heard that if you do not have seizures, but take anticonvulsants, it can cause you to have seizures. is that true? can taking a med for seizures cause you to have them even if you have never had a seizure? I take tegretol for bipolar, and just wanna know if thats possible. all sites i read on it only say things about people who are bipolar epileptics.

Sure, it can happen, but if you’re bipolar, you’re taking them at a dose meant for people with bipolar disorder. To work as an anticonvulsant, it has to be used at a much higher dose. Different effects on the brain. Is it totally impossible for it to happen? No, it could, but it’s very unlikely.
I’ve never heard that before. Some of my bipolar meds prevent seizures (I’ve had 2 in my life but I’m not epileptic) and I’ve never had seizures since I started them.
If they really had this effect I doubt your doctor would have given you this medication.
