Can Cipro cause high blood pressure?

by Admin on August 18, 2010

Taking Cipro for a UTI. I have always had normal BP, although it has gone up a little as I’ve gotten older. Now all of a sudden, it is very high in a very short period of time, with the bottom number at times over 100 over the past few days. Unable to find this info from a reliable source online.

You might be reacting to quinolones, or a class of antibiotics that Cipro falls into. I suggest you visit the website below. You need to inform your doctor about any adverse side effects that incur with certain antibiotics. Please drink purified reverse osmosis water, not just spring water when you are trying to treat a UTI with antibiotics. You need to do this to keep detoxifying your liver. Some urologists recommend cranberry juice too, but make sure that you don’t start drinking that until you stop your antibiotics.

It is not designed to raise BP, having a UTI could raise the BP. Is the UTI going away? Wait until the UTI is gone and you are off the Cipro for a week or so. If BP is not normal for you, then go see a doctor.

I was just looking at drugs.com for the side effects of cipro, high blood pressure is not one of them, your question made me curious because I was on cipro prior to having my gallbladder removed and despite being on blood pressure meds mine was high, but it seems that my anxiety and pain were the cause. Get checked out by a doctor, just because it was normal before doesn’t mean it can’t change, and weight and relative health doesn’t always mean you will or will not get high blood pressure.

You should definitely increase your fluid intake, plain water being the best, because, any infection will cause dehydration, plus the body uses more fluids in time of infection to help flush the toxins away. Cipro is basically the nuclear bomb of antibiotics & will definitely increase fluid loss, which can easily and rapidly raise your B/P.
