Can Buspar cause loss of hearing?

by Admin on March 16, 2010

I am on Buspar for Anxiety. Since on it, I have had a couple days of dizzy spells, 5 days of sinus issues, and 2 days of dealing with an ear infection, that is causing me to hear muffled sounds out of both ears. Just trying to figure out if the Buspar could be a cause. The doctor i need to talk to is not available until Saturday. I have seen a regular doctor and received antibiotics for the ear infection. I just want to hear again!

The first person to answer your question gives you a web address. It is worth reading this.
According to my research, dizziness is a side effect noted in 12% of a study group. Other allergic reactions are also noted. I can’t see anything about deafness in my sources, but the fact that this medication is thought to be responsible for dizziness, which is an affect on the middle ear, it is not beyond the realms of reason to question the use of this particular substance in terms of hearing loss.
However, it may be coincidence and you do actually have an ear infection as well.
I think as soon as you can contact the physician prescribing Buspar you can seek his opinion. I think I would be inclined to stop the medication and see what happens, but this may be an irresponsible suggestion if you have anxiety symptoms. At the very least ask your physician to prescribe medication without the properties of Buspar, then at least you can either eliminate it as the cause.
Ear infections when they clear up do not usually leave you with impaired hearing unless it is something pretty nasty.
My best wishes
Maureen
