Ibuprofen and naproxen sodium tame the pain caused by inflammation, such as arthritis, sprains, bruises, sunburns, and minor toothaches. There is a key difference between ibuprofen and naproxen: Naproxen sodium provides longer-lasting pain relief per dose than ibuprofen. A standard 220 mg tablet or caplet lasts eight to 12 hours, compared to the four-to-six-hour period for a 200 mg dose of ibuprofen.
Naproxen sodium which used to be prescription-only has been used for joint pain effectively for years. Ibuprofen regimens, which used to be the most common over-the-counter solution for years, can cause ulcers and other damage to your stomach lining.
Naproxen is generally safer for your system, and a dose works longer than ibuprofen.
ibuprofen is available over-the-counter and is consider the safest of the anti-inflammatory agents. Naproxen is more potent (stronger) and is available only on prescription.
I have included the major UK work of reference- the british national Formulary
Naproxen is a stronger non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller. They both come from the same family. It is not safer on the stomach, both ibuprofen and naproxen should be taken with or after food to avoid stomach problems.
In the UK, naproxen is prescription only (may be due to change in near future) and ibuprofen can be bought from anywhere so that tells you that naproxen is stronger.
