Are Vicodin or Darvocet-N safe for dogs?

by Admin on October 13, 2009

I am trying to clip my 45 lb dogs claws, And she won’t sit still! I have some loopy drugs for humans, but not sure if they work on my Lil Sugar. Are Vicodin or Darvocet-N safe for dogs?

NO- even aside from the narcotic portion, both contain acetominophen (tylenol) which is toxic to dogs.

Here is an article on how to teach your dog to all nail trimming:

Absolutely not. You should never give your pet medication without talking to your vet. Most prescription and even OTC pain killers for people are toxic to dogs. Have someone hold your dog down to trim the nails. Rather than drugging her and ending up in the vet ER later.

Sure, it will kill her and you won’t have to worry about her nails anymore. You should put down the clippers and pain killers and back away from the dog!

NOPE

these drugs generally contain tylenol as well.. which is TOXIC to dogs. The actually narcotic itself in the drug could also be toxic.

Talk to your vet about a sedative.
