Celecoxib, Celebrex, in the UK at least is NOT an anti-inflammatory licenced for use as a pain killer following injury. As a COX-2 drug it has a specialised licence for chronic joint disease only, ie osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.
COX-2 drugs have a number of group specific side effects making them unsuitable for routine use. Specifically they have cardiovascular risks, and in all patients have a smallest possible dose, shortest possible duration instruction as well as the usual anti-inflammatory risks to the gastrointestinal tract.
Everyone responds differently to medication. It is in your best interest to seek this information from your physician. If you feel uncomfortable with his suggestion, you can always ask for an alternative to his suggestion. That is your personal responsibility for your own due diligence. It also lets the physician know that you are interested in taking care of yourself. Since you are paying for his opinion, it is reasonable to participate in the process.
